You make decisions because it ensures quality.
You stay involved because things move more smoothly when you’re present.

And slowly, without realizing it, you become the central point of everything.

What once felt like effectiveness can quietly become limitation.

Because healthy leadership is not measured by how many people depend on you—but by how many people are equipped to lead without you.

How to Develop Leaders: The Subtle Trap of Dependency

Dependency rarely looks like a problem at first.

In fact, it often feels like success.

People come to you for answers.
You are constantly needed.
Things don’t move without your input.

But underneath that surface can be something much more serious:

  • Underdeveloped leaders
  • Bottlenecked systems
  • Burnout waiting to happen
  • Growth that can only go as far as you go

When everything depends on you, growth eventually hits a ceiling.

This ceiling often appears in ways leaders don’t immediately recognize. Opportunities are delayed because every decision requires approval. Emerging leaders hesitate to take initiative because they have never been trusted with responsibility. Teams become less agile because they are waiting for direction instead of moving with confidence. What begins as strong leadership can unintentionally create an environment where growth slows and potential remains undeveloped. How to Develop Leaders: The Shift From Needed Leader to Multiplying Leader

One of the most important leadership shifts you will ever make is this:

From being a “needed leader”
to becoming a “multiplying leader.”

Because being needed feels rewarding in the moment—but it is not sustainable long term.

It creates pressure you were never meant to carry.

Multiplying leadership asks a different question: Am I building people who can lead without me?

If the answer is no, leadership has not fully done its work.

How to Develop Leaders: The Jesus Model, Leading Toward Release

Jesus is our clearest example of intentional leadership release. In John 14–16, Jesus begins preparing His disciples for His departure. He does not say, “I will always be physically present so you can depend on Me.”

Instead, He says:

  • I am going away
  • You will do greater works
  • The Helper will come

Jesus consistently moved His disciples away from dependence on His physical presence and toward dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Even earlier in His ministry, He demonstrated this pattern:

He delegated authority.
He sent them out in Luke 9 and Luke 10.
He allowed them to grow through experience.

Jesus did not build a system that required Him to stay. He built a Kingdom that would continue through others. That is not disengagement.

That is intentional multiplication.

How to Develop Leaders: Leadership Reframe

Healthy leadership requires a shift in how we define success.

Old mindset: “If I’m not involved, it won’t be done right.”

New mindset: “If I’m always involved, it won’t be done without me.”

Old success metric: How essential I am

New success metric: How equipped others are

This is one of the clearest indicators of leadership maturity: not how much you control, but how much you release.

“He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do…” John 14:12 (NKJV)

This is not only a promise of power. It is a blueprint for multiplication. Jesus measures success not by proximity to Him—but by continuation through others.

Take an honest look at your current leadership environment:

  • What happens if I step away for 30 days?
  • Who is actually equipped to lead in my absence?
  • Where am I the only decision-maker?
  • What systems require my presence instead of my training?

This is important: you cannot multiply what you refuse to release.
